2nds win in Season Opener

Sun 01st March 2020 – After Storm Denis cancelled all fixtures two weeks ago, both St Brendans Mens Football teams can finally kick and pass a ball this Sunday when, despite Storm Jorge blowing this weekend, all fixtures went ahead and for the St Brendan’s Mens 2nd XV, that means the team can now face Man O War this Sunday in Longmeadows.

Again, like in the 1sts game, we weren’t sure what weather will pop up but the game began, knowing there would be rain during the first half, but before the heavens opened, Malachi Doyle waved his Wicklow Magic with the opening score for The Darkest Force after a pass from Bradley Skerritt.

Man O’War then equalised. Hugh Bannon, unleashing his inner Peter McDermott (Meath All Ireland winner in 1949 and 1954) wearing a Cap, made a solo run in the teeth of a hail shower, and pass to Doyle, who found William McCarthy and his low shot hit the back of the net to make it 1-1 to 0-1.

With blue skies on the horizon, The Dream Maker Sean Dardis got his first point of the afternoon after both Bannon and Doyle were involved in the set up. The latter two, as well as Cian Glennon then got involved in the build which saw The Wicklow Wizard notch up his second point as the rain and the hail eased off considerably.

Most of the action in the next eight minutes was in the Man O’War half and they hit a brace of points, but could have been more but for the quick reflections of Brian Mahon to maintain his lines. Dardis then hit his second point of the afternoon after Ciaran O’Shea supplied the final pass.

That became 1-5 when a free to Dardis, who played a cross field ball to Doyle and finally onto Bradley Skerritt for the point to the delight of the Philidelphia branch of The Bradley Skerritt Supporters Club, here to support their idol.

A point from Man O’War followed. Ciaran O’Shea who drew the foul himself, stepped up and pointed the free in which was the last action of the first half and a 1-6 to 0-4 lead from St Brendans 2nd Xv.

It was all Man O’War in the opening seven minutes of the second half with two points but also three wides, Ciaran O’Shea finally got St Brendans on the board in the second half with a 13 meter free in.

St Brendan’s had to wait until the final minute to get the next attempt for a score after tremendous pressure from Man O’War to reduce the gap to two points 1-7 to 0-8, Brian Mahon was alert to everything thrown at the away side and likewise Padraig Pratt and Maoliosa Mc Hugh (no doubt bouyed up by Tyrones win over the Dubs last night) making turnovers galore.

And in that final minute of normal time, Ferdia O ‘Donoghue settled any nerves with a point and a three point lead again. In injury time Man O’War hit another point to give Billy Kelly more anxious moments.

But not for long, as Sean Whyte struck with two minutes gone in injury time with a point and a three point lead again. Man O’War dropped in another hit and hope shot but Brian Mahon punched it away to Paddy McGuinn and that was it. The first win of the season for the St Brendans 2nd Xv.

Final Score from Longmeadows St Brendans 1-09 to 0-09 Man O’War.
