After losing their last match 3-12 to 0-08 to Naomh Barrog two weeks ago, the Kavanaghs of Aughrim Street 2nd team travelled to Collinstown Lane, next to the Starlights and Ballymun Kickhams grounds, full of hope and optimism that a victory would come their way against Na Fianna.
The home side opened the scoring, but John Tuffy equalised for The Darkest Force in a move which started with a Padraic Pratt turn-over. Tuffy would get the second score shortly afterwards, from a free after a foul on Eugene Billy Kelly. Seamus Murphy brilliantly seized possession from the opposition and passed to Rory Tynan for his first score. 0-03 to 0-01.
A Na Fianna shot dropped in the box and Paddy McGuinn slipped as he was making the save, luckily Aidan Melia, Damien Daly and Sean Dardis all tracked back to prevent the goal and Na Fianna were content with the point. Tynan saw a shot drift narrowly wide against a strong breeze.
The Mobhi Roaders hit 1-01 without reply in the following 5 minutes, but St Brendan’s did not bend the knee and battled on. Paul Farrelly played a free to Pearse Ryan who with support of his daughters Leigha and Isla on the side-line, made a nice solo run. He passed to Rory Tynan who found Tuffy in a good position, who attempted to round the goalkeeper but saw his shot blaze over the bar.
Tuffy was on hand again with his fourth and St Brendan’s fifth point when Bradley Skerritt passed to Eugene Billy Kelly, whose shot hit the goalkeeper and back out, but Tynan won possession back and passed to Tuffy for the point.
Another Na Fianna point followed. Pratt turned-over the possession yet again and found Seamus Murphy who passed to Kelly, who passed to Tynan, who passed to Tuffy who converted for his fifth point.
Half Time Score: St Brendan’s 0-06 to 1-04 Na Fianna
After a rousing half time team talk from John Micheal McLoughlin, St Brendan’s started the second half brightly and had the game levelled after a score from Fergal Comiskey.
Despite the good start, St Brendan’s were back to square one when Na Fianna fired home for a second goal. 2-04 to 0-07. The Darkest Force replied when Bradley Skerritt saw his goal bound shot saved but Eugene Billy Kelly recovered and tapped the ball over the bar in a good response.
A Na Fianna point followed and Kelly saw another goal bound shot saved. Thanks to an advantage following a foul on Seamus Murphy, the ball was taken back for a free-in but Tuffy saw his shot go wide.
On the other side Paddy McGuinn made a clearance into space; Sean Dardis collected the ball and sent it towards Tuffy and then on to Rory Tynan who was happy to throw it over for his second point of the afternoon. 2-05 to 0-09
But that was as good as it got for St Brendan’s as Na Fianna were dominant during the final 5 minutes of the game, scoring 1-03 without reply, with the goal being the final score of the match.
So another disappointing defeat for the St Brendan’s second team who ultimately ran out of gas in the closing stages, but many positives can be taken especially in the first half.
Final Score from Collinstown Lane: St Brendan’s 0-09 to 3-08 Na Fianna.
