Hurlers Champo v Kevins 18072017 (3)Tuesday 18 July 2017 –
The St Brendan’s Hurlers sponsored by The Luas ross City, continued their fight against AHL7 relegation by taking on bottom of the table Thomas Davis in a must win game on last Sunday 09 July 2017. The Decision by player manager Cian Walsh to ban this writer from going to Longmeadows (despite being in Salthill for the Connacht Football final, and Mayo not playing!) paid off in spectacular fashion as the Dark Force recorded a 4-21 to 3-17 victory. The first victory under the Luas Cross City sponsorship which was celebrated by a Luas Driver ringing his bell on the Luas from Heuston to Museum.

As one relegation battle eased, another one took place on sunny Dolphin Park as the Hurlers faced Kevins in a Junior B Relegation Playoff Semi-Final.

But it was the home side who out of the blocks early with 1-02 in the opening 8 minutes. Gavin Muldoon had a shot that went wide. St Brendans did get on the board a minute later with a free from Oisin Carley following a foul on Cian Walsh.

Carley had another free which fell short but was not collected property by the Kevins backs and dropped into the net. Rory Tynan made a bee line towards goal after collecting a long Carley pass, but his shot went wide.

Kevins hit a brace of points the first from a 65 and the second from a free in. Kevin’s then got a second goal, from a free after a foul by Eddie Hearne. Hearne then made amends by pointing a long distance point from play 2-06 to 1-02.

A shot from Gavin Muldoon was saved for a 65 which Carley converted. Conor Browne turned on a sixpence to beat his marker and Rory Tynan made a great catch from the pass but got fouled in the process. Carley again converted the free.

Half Time Score: St Brendans 1-04 to 2-9 St Kevins

There were high hopes of a comeback in the second half but those hopes were but brilliantly and brutally shot down by Kevins with 1-02 in the opening two minutes of the second half. A puck-out from Shane Foley found Wexican Eddie Hearne but his shot went wide.

A pass from John Maguire found Rory Tynan whose hope of breaking the Wexican stranglehold on the score sheet were dashed when he was dragged back when heading for goal. The free  from Wexican Oisin Carley was driven low and deflected off a Kevins Hurl and over the bar.

More Kevin’s scores, including a goal followed, Muldoon was then wrestled to the ground when attacking the Kevin’s goal. Carley shot low but the ball was caught by the goalkeeper who then decided to come off his line and try to attack from defence, only to lose the ball and a Ronan Costello snapshot was blocked by Kevins and cleared.

Carley ensured an all Wexican St Brendan’s score sheet by pointing another free in the final minutes. St Brendan’s Hurlers now need to win the Relegation play-off final to ensure Junior B Hurling in 2018
