Kate Reddan makes Na Gaeil Oga pay ‘Deerly’

Wednesday 02 Aug 2017 – After a last weeks home win against Ballyboden, the girls made the short trip to the Phoenix Park to play Na Gaeil Oga. The teams haven’t met in a competitive game until this year when St Brendans triumphed 0-10 to 0-05 at home in the league. This being Championship the Ladies expected another good tough game against their competitors.

The game threw-in with St Brendans playing into a strong breeze but the girls were on their game and attacking from the get go. They moved the ball swiftly through the hands of Julie O’Neil, Kate Reddan and Julie Fox before a foul was committed and Christine Dilworth pointed from the placed ball.

This was a familiar trait throughout the half with St Brendans attacking in waves from the back with the Connacht duo of Curley and Duffy finding pockets out wide almost at will. This period and tactic proved fruitful with goals coming from Kate Reddan, Sinead Morrissey x2 and Julie Fox. Reddan’s goal in particular followed a flowing move from half back where Ines Rubio had an interception passed to Julie O and onto Kate who solo’d all of 50yard before dropping the ball and channelling her inner Paddy Bermingham to volley home from 20 yards!

The defence stood firm at the back with a concession of just 2 points both from frees. Emma Duffy and Andrea Curley continued the form of driving forward but with Nan calling orders from full back their defensives duties were never in doubt either.

Half time score St Brendans 4-05 to 0-02 Na Gaeil Oga

Over the course of half time the wind died and the girls were now playing uphill with the aid of reduced breeze for 30mins, the girls played very well moving the ball constantly going forward which resulted in some lovely long range scoring, the pick of these coming from Morrissey, Dilworth and Fox. The defence stood firm and making life difficult for the Na Gaeil Oga forwards only conceding their first and last score from play after 53minutes

This was a good performance with a lot of the girls performing confidently. The girls showed great cohesion had played well in all lines as a team

It’s back on the road next week with a visit to Perrystown for the final group game in the championship against Robert Emmetts. All support will welcomed.

Final score from Phoenix Park: St Brendan’s 5-13 to 0-03 Na Gaeil Oga
