Nicola Carrabine Points the way against Naomh Olaf

Ladies League v Naomh Olaf 23052018 (4)Wed 23 May 2018 – The St Brendan’s Ladies 1st XV, sponsored by McGowans of Phibsborough, continued their quest for a AFL5 promotion play-off berth with Naomh Olaf the visitors to Grangegorman.

The game took a while to get going with Naomh Olaf getting an opening score from a free-in after seven minutes. Roisin McDonald saw a free hit the upright and straight to Sinead Morrissey who passed to Julie Fox whose shot was blocked down and eventually cleared.

The Female Dark Force finally got a foothold in the game when Sinead Reilly was fouled in the penalty area after a brilliant solo run. The Mullingar Dynamo stepped up to take the penalty and score the goal. Morrissey would go on to add a point to that goal in the next attack after a pass from Christine Dilworth.

After missing the Clondalkin game last Wednesday, due to the Ed Sheeran concert, Julie Fox marked her return with a great goal when Morrissey passed the final ball to the Ballylanders Bullet for a bullet of a shot into the Naomh Olaf net. 2-01 to 0-01. Fox then added a point to her tally in the next attack.

Christine Dilworth then made it 2-03 to 0-02 with a point, but from her own opinion and reaction, it could have a goal. Claire McIntyre was unlucky with a shot that went wide after some good defending. A free-in by Naomh Olaf which was pointed was the last action of the first half.

In the second half the lead was back to 7 points thanks to a point from Nicola Carrabine. Sinead ‘Dangermouse’ Reilly’s intended foot pass went across the face of goal where O’Curry retrieved to shoot on the outside of her right boot from a tight angle and over the bar.

Naomh Olaf then responded with three points on the spin, but The Female Dark Force then responded with a brace of points, the first from Roisin McDonald and the second from Christine Dilworth, both scored after winning Olaf kick-outs.

Karen O’Connell was desperate not to concede a goal this evening and this bid was almost ended when an Olaf’s shot hit the butt of the post and wide. Another shot went straight into the breadbasket of The Fresh Prince of Kells and cleared by Claire ‘The Heat’ Gallagher.

With 10 minutes to go Olaf’s got another brace of points, but Sinead ‘Dangermouse’ Reilly took it back to a 5 point game, with a point after collecting McDonalds free in. It was Reilly’s last contribution because during the play, one Naomh Olaf player picked up an injury and was forced to retire from the game.  Only 15 players turned up for the away side so to make things fair, James McGinley made the difficult decision took off Dangermouse for a 14 v 14 game.

Sinead Morrissey’s bid for a 2nd goal ended when her shot was saved for a 45, McDonald took the free in to Dilworth, who passed to Morrissey and her shot fell short. The Mullingar Dynamo won the ball back and was fouled 20 meters out. McDonald took the free-in and the Olafs back broke the ball straight down Dilworth and The Knocknagree Knight settled the match with a goal.

Naomh Olaf did score a consolation point but an intended goal shot went wide, much to the relief of Karen O’Connell with a clean sheet and another St Brendan’s victory. With Whitehall Colmcilles also winning this evening, the battle for 2nd place in AFL5 will reach an exciting climax on a date to be announced. But for now, focus switches to the Division 5 Cup and a home encounter with Round Towers Clondalkin on June 6th.

Final Score from Grangegorman: St Brendan’s 3-07(16) to 0-09 Naomh Olaf
