Hurlers face play off to stay in Junior C

Hurlers v Ballyboden St Endas 09092018 (2)Sun 09 Sep 2018 – Fresh from their League win against St Brigid’s, the St Brendan’s Hurlers, sponsored by Transdev, were back in Junior C Championship action with a Round 5 encounter against Ballyboden St Enda’s on Sunday Morning. Both teams having lost all four games in Group 1 were playing to determine which team would face the Relegation play off against the bottom side in Group 2.

The game took place in Knocklyon park, with some players making their way to Ballyboden’s main pitch at Ballycullen, but all arrived in time for the 11am throw in. It was The Dark Force force who got the opening score when Shane Foley whipped in a free in towards The White Feather Darren Callanan, who was tackled and spilled the sliotar to John Maguire but it was a fresh air shot, then the sliotar went to Michael Heffernan to drive it over the bar.

Ballyboden dominated the next ten minutes with four points on the spin, two points were from turnovers and one 65. Cavan and Monaghan combined with John Maguire and Damien Daly combining in a move that allowed Paul Hyland to win possession and puck St Brendan’s 2nd point.

Ballyboden got another four points on the spin, with two free in’s, one from 99 meters. Noel Lanes puckout went to Michael Heffernan and onto Paul Hyland for his second point. After a Rory Tynan wide, Ballyboden showed great ruthlessness with a goal following a turnover. In response St Brendan’s responded with two free in’s from Shane Foley, the first after Vincent O’Flynn was fouled and the second from a foul on Damien Daly after he picked up a Sean Dardis pass.

A fluffed sideline cut from the home side was the last action of the first half.

Half Time Score: St Brendan’s 0-05 to 1-08 Ballyboden.

Ballyboden quickly put the game to bed with 1-02 in the opening 9 minutes. A turnover by Hyland went onto find Padraig Pratt and the Corkman tipped over the sixth point of the morning. Another goal followed for Ballyboden and Aidan Melia came on for Rory Tynan and his first contribution was to collect Michael Heffernan’s pass and puck it over the bar. 3-11 to 0-07.

Another Boden point followed, but St Brendan’s kept plugging away and got an eighth point thanks to a free in from Paul Hyland after a foul on Darren Callanan. Another Boden point from the big full forward (his last action of the day) followed, and Hyland again returned with a point from a free in, he could have got a goal but had to settle for the point.

Hyland went for a hat trick of free in’s after a foul on Aidan Melia, this time he struck low and although the goalkeeper got a hand on it, Dave Lowey was on hand to puck the slioter in the net for a consolation score. Lowey’s bid for a second goal ended when his shot sailed across the face of goal in the final action of the game.

Final score from Knocklyon Park: St Brendan’s 1-09 to 3-13 Ballyboden St Enda’s.
