Heery's Moment of Magic

ROSCOMMON ace Colin Garvin showed once again why he was the 2009 player of the year after keeping yet another clean sheet in the Dark Force's opening League match of the season.
The Boyle maestro was helped, no doubt, by the fact that opposition Naomh Barrog never actually had a shot on target and St Brendan's eventually ran out easy nine point winners.
Man-of-the-match Tom Heery got the Gormanites off to an outstanding start when his perfectly judged shot deceived the keeper and looped over his head. Heery said afterwards that it was a fluke but this was just false modesty.
St Brendan's good start continued with further points from John Moore, Dave Ryan and Heery and the lead would have been greater after goal fever set in amongst the forwards.
The half time score was 1-4 to 0-1 and the Dark Force full back line of Mark Kinsella, Ken Foxe and Rob Stack had hardly broken sweat with little ball reaching their end of the park.
Other defenders had grafted a bit harder and Captain Peter Burke's voice was a couple of octaves higher after he blocked the ball with an ill-chosen part of his anatomy.
The second half got off to a dream start with an excellent point from Dave Henry, followed not long after by a goal for Dave Ryan when the ball came loose in the opposition square.
St Brendan's continued to add to their tally with Mark McEntee and John Ryan dominating midfield and Robbie Caulfield and Gavin Hanley full of running.
Shane O'Dwyer and Brendan Sharkey broke up most Opposition attacks before they even got going and it was only in the final ten minutes that Naomh Barrog began to make inroads.
As the Dark Force perhaps began to show their age and lack of training, the Kilbarrack men managed to increase their tally to seven points as the game reached its conclusion.
But they don't call Fortress Grangegorman a fortress for nothing and Naomh Barrog never looked likely to do anything more than make the scoreline semi-respectable.
After the match, the more hygienic players made use of the newly installed “power” showers. Indeed, so luxurious are the showers that it is feared John Ryan may have been locked in the dressing rooms, after spending an inordinate amount of time enjoying a soak.
All players will be expected to show up for training on Tuesday, beginning 6:15pm sharp, where a rescue mission for the Mayo-man is also planned.
