Gorman Super Sunday II: Hurlers in fine form but Footballers lose nothing in defeat
St Kevins came to Grangegorman for a cup game on Sunday March 7th 2010. Brendans hosted a slightly depleted side with Ronan Coone and Shane Foley delayed on stag trips at home and abroad respectively. Kevins got their first point from a free. Eddie Hearne at center forward got Brendans game off to a flying start with two points after spectacular individual efforts. A free followed for the home side slotted over by Seamus Harrington. Kevins followed with some frees and points following some loose play from the home team. Then Dave Mullins and Harrington combined for another point for the Tipperary man. The turning point in the first half once again involved Eddie Hearne winning ball at midfield and passing off his knees to Seamus Harrington. A solo run successfully drew the defenders leaving Big Eddie free to take a hand pass. A thundering shot on goal followed which the keeper did well to deflect out but unfortunately for him only to the on-rushing Harrington who smashed the sliotar to the roof of the net. Eddie Hearne then followed with two more points bringing his first half tally to 0-4. The backs then came into their own harassing the opposite forwards as only they can. One free followed before half time for Brendans, once again finished by Harrington. Half-time score 1-08 to 0-6 The second half started as the first ended. Following a long ball into the square the sliotar was picked and smashed to the net by Gar Cleary. This really finished the game as a contest. The backs to a man kept tight and constantly sent the ball long to Big Eddie who consistently won free after free, which for the most part - not mentioning a spectacular pick up and drop - were slotted over by Seamus Harrington. Eddie Hearne got on the score sheet again with a point midway through the half before Eddie Duignan got a spectacular point off his left. Most amazed were his teammates who didn't even know he had a left. Final Score 2-14 to 0-11 Team: Shane Gilbert, Sean Roban, Mark Kinsella, Noel Lane, Trevor Donavan, Tom Bourke, Benny Carey, John Walsh, Trevor Purtill, Seamus Harrington (1-08), Eddie Hearne (0-5), Gar Cleary (1-0), Paul McDonagh, Eddie Duignan (1-01), Dave Mullins. Parson Cup Round 2 v Erin Go Breagh The Footballers exited the Parson Cup after losing to Erin Go Breagh in a low scoring but pulsating encounter. Karl Feehan got the opening score for The Dark Force but the men from Dublin 15 equalized in a move which started from their own goal line. A goal attempt by Barry Halpin was saved for a 45, from which Gavin Hanley played a neat one-two to John Ryan for the second point, only for Erin go Breagh to equalise again. The men from Ongar and Clonee took the lead in a carbon copy move of their first score, before the hard working David Henry had a goal attempt saved. The away side had the ball in the back of the net following a mix-up in the full back line and their forward finished calmly from distance. However, St Brendan’s were back on the move shortly after and Karl Feehan responded with a free. However, excellent defensive work from Ken Foxe, Willie McCarthy, Tom Heery and late sub Rob Stack ensured the gap remained close and all were involved in Moore’s final point. |
