The Ballygar File

When west meets east in a battle for GAA glory

Every October since 1999, St. Brendan’s travel west to take on St. Brendan’s of Ballygar, County Galway, in the Michael Lohan Cup Competition. Both hurling and football matches are played.

The event is held in memory of Michael Lohan, father of our club treasurer and dual star Padraig Lohan and a highly respected man locally in Ballygar. Padraig’s brothers still play for the Ballygar club, which is also called after Saint Brendan. Ballygar is in East Galway, not far from County Roscommon, (although be careful not to confuse the two counties if you ever are down there).

Frank Hynes and Mark Crehan both hail from the same general area, and another man with local connections is their colleague Dessie Farrel, whose wife comes from Four Roads, only up the road.
