A daisy cutter on the Astroturf

S2nds v Ballymun Kickhams 27092020 (39)un 27th Sep 2020 - After a 2-13 to 2-9 victory over Geraldine P Morans two weeks ago. The St Brendan’s 2nd XV, in partnership with Stoneybatter Pride of Place, had it all to do against a Ballymun Kickhams side who are two from two in Group 2 of the Junior 5 Shield. This match, originally at 3pm was bought forward to 11am to allow several Ballymun Kickhams players watch their Seniorm team in action in the Senior Championship Final later in the afternoon.

The home side, playing in the Astroturf pitch, which must have been re-laid since this writer was last here, got the opening score of the morning, but Brogan equalised for The Darkest Force following a turnover by Paddy McGuinn and good work from Cormac Mullen, and Ciaran Lawless. Ciaran O’Shea made it 2 points to 1 after a Ballymun shot fell short to Mark Redican, played the ball to  Harte and finally onto O’Shea for the score.

That became three points to one with Brian Hobbins scoring with an excellent final pass from Ferdia Donohoe. Indeed it would be a brace for Hobbins with the fourth point of the game with again Donohoe supplying the final pass. Ballymun added their second point of the game going into the first half swig of the magic bottle.

Ten Minutes to go and Brogan had the ball the Ballymun net with a low shot that put the goalkeeper the wrong way, indeed it would be all St Brendan’s for the rest of the half, With O’Shea getting his second point, O’Shea turned provider for Donohoe to score point number six, and Dave Ryan provided Brian Hobbins for his third and St Brendan’s seventh point of the half. Half time score 1-7 to 0-2 for the away side, with no stoppage time played, such was the free flowing nature of the first half.

Brian Hobbins picked up where he left off in the second half by hitting a brace of points, in between Ryan made a goal line clearance and cleared by Padraig Pratt, onto Maguire and finally Hobbins for the second of his brace. Malachi Doyle got on the scoresheet with a point after weaving this way to get his spot and shoot over the bar. The home side got their third point of the morning, 25 minutes after their last and that was the score going into the second half water break 1-10 to 0-3.

Ciaran O’Shea made his personal tally of 0-3, after Joe Kenny bulldozed his way through the Ballymun defence, after winning Mark Redican’s kick out and passed to O’Shea for the score. Kenny was making a huge impact and got on the scoresheet after collecting Brian Hobbins’ pass. 1-12 to 0-3 and scoring difference would now be vital with one team emerging from the group to the Semi Final.

Ballymun showed flashes of brilliance that was shown in the previous two Shield matches with 3 points on the spin that could have an impact on the scoring difference, but  Kenny made the score 1-13 to 0-6 with Ciaran O’Shea winning a turnover and pass to Hobbins. Another Ballymun point, from a free in, followed and Brogan pointed a free in after a Hobbins foul to make it 1-14 to 0-7. Brogan would make it a brace with a point from play after Cormac Mullen made a 50 meter solo run.

The 11 point lead was reduced to 8 with a late Ballymun goal and could have got a second goal in quick succession but Paddy McGuinn made a point blank save off the goal line for a 45, which was converted. Another attack from Ballymun was thwarted by a thunderous shoulder by the The Darkest Force defence which distracted the Ballymun player into shooting wide. That was the last action of the match, it was a win for St Brendan’s but unfortunately, not enough to top the group and it’s the Malahide men that make it to the knockout stages.

But that is not the end of the road for St Brendan’s and now focus on the Stoneybatter Pride Of Place Autumn Cup this October with three games coming up against Naomh Fionnbarra, St Brigid’s and St Oliver Plunketts Eoghan Ruadh.

Final Score from Páirc Cicham, St Brendan’s 1-15 to 1-07 Ballymun Kickhams.
