Disappointment for Ladies 2nd Team

Wed 05 Apr 2018 - This evening the St Brendan’s Ladies Football 1st XV, Sponsored by McGowans of Phibsborough, were due to play their first ever game at the new Grangegorman with Whitehall Colmcilles the opponents. However, at 5pm this evening, the pitch in Grangegorman was deemed unplayable, such was the heavy rainfall in the Dublin area over the past 72 hours.

Indeed this game was one of a lot of games that were called off this evening with only 4 of the scheduled 40 games going ahead. One of those games that did go ahead was the St Brendan’s 2nd XV’s encounter against Ballymun Kickhams, played on AstroTurf at Páirc Cicham.

However it was on opening eight minutes to forget for The Female Darkest Force. After conceding 5-2 for the whole of the first half against St James Gaels last Wednesday, St Brendan’s conceded that score in the opening eight minutes, the fifth of which, in this writers opinion, the best of those five goals.

The Sneem Supreme Anne Marie Riney was in goal and even deflected the ball over the bar with her foot to prevent a sixth goal, but the sixth, and indeed, the seventh, eighth and ninth goal’s were scored before the referee blew the whistle for half time.

The only opportunities for St Brendan’s this first half came from Deirdre Holland, whose shot fell short, Lauren Prenderville and Marina Kilduff who both shot wide.

Eugene Cunningham gave a very emotionally charged half time team talk to regrow the players amd get things moving forward. To sew up the defence in the second half, Eugene bought on Benedetta Bianchi, from Italy, and to ensure some super tough defending that Italian Serie A Soccer is famous for.

Eimear Norton, Lorna Barton, Catriona Smiddy, Jean Cleary and Andrea Doherty did play superb defensively, limiting Ballymun Kickhams to 1-2 in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, whilst Lauren Prenderville had a great chance for a shot that went wide.

But alas, Ballymun woke up and scored two goals in the final 10 minutes but could have been 13, but for a super point blank save from Riney after a short kick out was pinched. Both Kilduff and Romy Madden had shots late on in the second half with Madden’s the best effort that fell shot, as St Brendan’s succumb without even getting a score on the board.

To put things into prospective, Ballymun’s opponents from last week, Na Fianna C also succumbed without scoring and they are St Brendan’s 2nd XV’s next opponents next Wednesday in St Mobhi Road.

As for the 1st XV, they travel to Garristown next Wednesday facing a Garristown team who, despite going undefeated all season last year, are still reeling from a loss to near neighbours Ballyboughal last Wednesday.
