Ladies 2nd Shield Final v Scoil Ui Chonaill 29082018 (6)Wed 29 Aug 2018 – Last week, while the St Brendans Ladies 1st Team were involved in an epic Junior C Final. The St Brendans 2nd XV, sponsored by Martin and Moran Property Advisors were playing 15 miles away in Newcastle and defeated the local side St Finian’s Newcastle to advance to this evenings Final of the Junior G Shield, where Scoil Ui Chonaill were the opposition. This was the third meeting between the sides with the ladies from Clontarf Road winning both previous encounters by three points.

St Brendans got off to good start with the opening score going to Sharon Lynskey following great play by The Turkish Delight Mina Alkentaya to pass to Marina Kilduff and onto the Aughamore Avenger Lynskey for the point.

A free in by Scoil Ui Chonaill hit the upright and was cleared by Emma Duffy, who played the ball to Alkentaya and finally onto Kilduff and the Roscommon lady doubled St Brendans lead with a tight angled point. The dream start continued when Tanya (number 11) found the net after a pass from Lynskey. 1-02 to no score after five minutes.

Scoil Ui Chonaill, with half of their panel not yet reaching 20 years of age with almost 100% possession, scored six points on the spin, the sixth of which was hit in the 19th minute. But Scoil also hit six wides and three shots falling short to Augustina Lazzerini. Helen Macklin and Anne Marie Riney also provoked their markers into overcarrying.

A long ball from Alkentaya was intended for (Tanya Number 11) but the Turkish Delight was fouled when disposing of the ball and Tanya took the free from where the ball landed, but the free in fell short and Marina Kilduff couldn’t get her hand to it. The game was slipping away from The Female Dark Force when Scoil got a brace of points to make it 0-08 to 1-02.

St Brendan’s needed the next score to stay in the contest and they got just that with a goal from (Jean Number 13) after a tremendous solo run. But no sooner had St Brendans gotten back in the match than Scoil Ui Chonaill responded with a goal of their own to reopen the three point lead. Indeed they went to town in the closing stages of the first half with another goal and two points but could have got a third goal in the first half but for a timely interception from Shona Daly.

Half Time Score: St Brendan’s 2-02 to 2-10 Scoil Ui Chonaill.

Scoil Ui Chonaill added two more points in the opening three minutes of the second half, but Sabrina Fleming played the ball to Marina Kilduff to score a third St Brendan’s point to make it 2-12 to 2-03.

Scoil’s dominance of the game continued with three more points going into the final quarter of the game. After another point, Augustina Lazzerini’s quick kickout went straight to a Scoil forward to went starlight and although her shot was saved by the Argentinian, another player got the rebound to score the third goal of the evening.

But St Brendans did respond when a long ball by Mina Alkentaya found Marina Kilduff whos low shot beat the goalkeeper for a third goal for Brendans. 3-15 to 3-03.

In the closing stages, Kilduff had a shot that went wide, bizarrely, St Brendans only wide of the whole match! But Scoil Ui Chonaill would take the Junior G Shield to their Clontarf Road clubhouse.
