Mina Alkunkaya goal not enough as Ladies 2nds exit Championship

Ladies 2nds v Erins Isle 08082018 (2)Wed 08 August 2018 – While the decision by the St Brendan’s GAA Committee to field a 2nd Ladies Football team this season has been, without doubt, a huge success, one of the problems facing this writer is the fact that both the 1sts and 2nds are playing games simultaneously on Wednesday evenings and the 1sts get the lions share of the coverage on this website. But once in a while, the Ladies 2nds, sponsored by Martin and Moran Property Advisors, do play a game when the 1sts are not and this Wednesday evening is the exception. With the 1sts having a bye in the final round of the Junior C Championship, The 2nds are in action in the final round of group games in the Junior G Championship against Erins Isle at Farnham Drive in Finglas.

The home side opened the scoring after four minutes with a point. In return two wides were recorded by the Female Dark Force and Erins Isle went up to get a goal to make it 1-02 to no score.

But Kilduff then managed to get her first score of the evening, a point after a turnover by Anne Marie Casey. Helen Lenihan won the Isles kick out and played the ball to Kilduff who ensured that Erins Isle would get a fight to the end by hitting a great goal to make it 1-02 to 1-01. Indeed Kilduff could have given her side the lead when Tanya Brennan played a great ball to Kilduff but an unlucky bounce prevented her from getting a clean contact and the ball went wide.

Kilduff eventually got her second score after a turnover by Anne Marie Casey and final pass by Aideen Brophy. That would be the Half time tally for St Brendans 2nds as Erins Isle notched up a brace of points to lead by 3 at half time.

Half Time Score: St Brendan’s 1-02 to 1-05 Erins Isle

After Erins Isle got the opening score of the second half, Helen Lenihan had a shot that went straight to the Isles goalkeeper but her clearance went straight to Mina Alkunkaya and the Turkish Delight stunned onlookers with a tremendous goal to put one between the sides.

But it was all Erins Isle for the next ten minutes with a brace of points and a sideline ball that went to their nippy centre half back who rounded the defence and Augustina Lazzerini and scored a great goal to make it 3-08 to 2-02.

After another Isles point, Mina Alkunkaya had a shot that went wide. But Marina Kilduff scored another point after Helen Macklin won the kickout and passed to her fellow Rossie. Indeed Kilduff increased her tally with another point with Mina Alkunkaya supplying the final pass.

But Erins Isle finished strongly and a fourth goal ensured a home semi-final for the Finglas outfit in the Junior G Championship, but the season is not yet over for The Female Darkest Force because in a new initiative, The LGFA have introduced Shield competitions for those teams who failed to make the semi-finals of the Junior Championships. St Brendans 2nds will be facing St Finians Newcasle in the Junior G Shield next Wednesday the 15th.

For the St Brendans Ladies 1st XV, who had a bye this evening, the semi-final pairing are now known with The Female Dark Force travelling to Pairc De Burca in Stillorgan to face a top quality Kilmacud Crokes outfit, that will be some game!

Final Score from Farnham Drive Finglas: Erins Isle 4-11(23) to 2-04(10) St Brendans 2nds.
