Game three of the Go Ahead Adult Hurling League Division 7 saw the St Brendan’s Hurlers, Sponsored by Bodibro, take on Lucan Sarsfields in Longmeadows. Today may have been the first day of Daylight Saving Time, but weather wise it was anything but, with a cold strong breeze blowing into the Garda Boat Club end of Longmeadows.
Lucan Sarsfields won the loss and played with the wind in the first half and made the most of the strong breeze by scoring two long distance points after 5 minutes. Mark ‘The Edge’ Kinsella made a clearance towards Rob ‘Shane Lowry’ O ‘Hanrahan and finally towards Tom Kiely to rattle the slioter onto the net and a lead for The Dark Force, 1-0 to 0-2.
The lead did not last long though. The away side hitting another long distance shot over the bar. In fact, it was all Lucan Sarsfields from there scoring wise, hitting seven more points for the rest of the first half, but could have been more because they hit eight wides and two shots fell short into goalkeeper Joseph O’Connor. On the other side, Eoin ‘Quinn Roux’ Fallon and Kiely had shots that went wide, in Fallon’s case the shot curled wide at the last moment.
Half time score St Brendan’s 1-0 Lucan Sarsfields 0-10.
In the second half, it took St Brendan’s 10 minutes to get the board thanks to Brian Dolan, following good play from Michael ‘Fernandes’ Harte and Jack ‘The Relegator’ McCarron, Lucan hit a brace of points in the meantime. A Harte shot fell short to the Lucan goalkeeper who batted it down but only towards Pa Carey, who admitted was caught off guard and the slioter bounced off his hurl and eventually cleared
On the other side of the field, Sean ‘The Dream Maker’ Dardis was playing a fine game with multiple turnovers. Kiely was forced into shooting from a tight angle and wide. Fallon likewise, on the other side of the goalmouth but he was successful when his shot went over the bar, 0-12 to 1-2. Then Fallon won a free in to allow Kiely to redeem himself from an earlier miss to point the free in, 1-3 to 0-12.
A Harte shot went wide but then Pa Carey won possession and it the 4th point for St Brendan’s but Lucan Sarsfields promptly crushed any hope of a St Brendan’s comeback by rattling O’Connor’s net to end the match as a contest.
Eoin Corcoran and Conor Walsh combined to allow Eoin Fallon hit a late consolation point for the home side who had several shots throughout the second half curl wide in an otherwise swirling wind.
The Hurlers now have to wait until April 19th and an away fixture to Fingallians in a bid to get the first win of the season.
Final Score from Longmeadows St Brendan’s 1-5 Lucan Sarsfields 1-16.
