Round 3 of the GoAhead AFL6 saw the St Brendan’s Football 1st XV, sponsored by Dynamic Safety Solutions take on Ballyboden Wanderers in Longmeadows. St Brendan’s are looking for their first win of the season, while Ballyboden Wanderers have won the only match they played thus far.
The Men from the Dublin Mountains started the match by hitting two long distance wides. The Dark Force got the opening score that was ‘Made in County Antrim’ with The Bombscare Donal Clarke supplying the pass to The Adventure Man Nicky McCafferty. The duo combined again in a bid for a goal but McCafferty’s low effort was cleared off the line.
The lead was doubled with 6:42 gone thanks to The Valley Rover Tadhg O’Brien after The Golden Mullet Conall Morgan won the Wanderers kick out.
15 minutes were gone and Wanderers took the lead with a point from play, then hit a two pointer, but that lead did not last long after a foul on Scott O’Rourke allowed Clarke to score the point from a free in to level matters, and then O'Rourke himself would score the point to retake the lead for his side, after winning the kick out himself.
It was all Wanderers for the rest of the first half, scoring four consecutive points from four consecutive free in’s and were leading at half time on a score of 0-4 to 0-7.
7 minutes gone in the second half and St Brendan’s started getting on top of the contest with Tadhg O’Brien scoring a two pointer against the run of play. Eoghan ‘The Bridge’ Clogher was well alert in this second half by using his height to field Wanderers shots falling short, in fact, he stopped two shots in the opening 10 minutes of the half.
Washington Sean Whelan won crucial possession the middle third, then passed into Kevin ‘The Seventy Sixer’ Berry and finally a pass onto O’Rourke and his shot went over the bar to level the contest, 7 points each.
The away side hit a rasping shot over the bar to retake the lead, McCafferty then levelled matters again with a point, again assisted by Clarke, who then had a shot a minute later, which went wide, but there was a dispute over whether went over, but the referee still waved it wide.
St Brendan’s retook the lead with 16:22 gone in the second half, with Scott O’Rourke pointing after Whelan won the Wanderers kick out. A point that was crucial as far as John ‘Tesla’ Tuffy was concerned, but there was a call for a free in after O’Rourke was pushed in the back after collecting a pass from Adam ‘Wishful Thinking’ Lynch.
Wanderers levelled matters again, 9 points each. On the other end, Eoghan Clogher again used his size to catch two shots falling short, the second of which was passed onto Luke ‘The Alternative Nuke’ Reilly, then onto Liam ‘The Lumberjack’ Atkinson, then Whelan and onto McCafferty and he went on to score the 10th point as the game went into the final few minutes.
In injury time, Wanderers won a free in, but it wasn’t outside the 40 meter arc, so they had to settle for a single and again a level game.
Two minutes into injury time, and substitute Tom ‘Heatmap’ Gallagher thought he had won a free in for his side, but the referee would penalise him for dragging the arm of the Wanderers back, a free out ensued but that was that.
A level game.
After the match, David Beggy admitted that he wanted to have a cigarette (Player's No.6, remember them?) after being off the smokes for two weeks, such was the anxiety of the match which could have gone either way. Next up as an away fixture against St Margaret’s on April 12th.
Final Score from Longmeadows, St Brendan’s 0-10, Ballyboden Wanderers 0-10.
Later in the afternoon, both St Brendan’s Football 2nd XV’s were in action, but unfortunately were beaten. The Men’s 2nds were comprehensively beaten 3-13 to 0-6 away to St Finian’s Swords, with the home side ending the contest quickly with the three goals coming in the first half. Both The Banner Raiser Brian Hobbins and The Landlord Andy Moran scored two points, whereas John ‘Tesla’ Tuffy came on as a sub and scored two points himself, showing his side, this is how you do it!
The Ladies 2nd XV were unable to follow up their victory in their season opener by going down 1-13 to 1-12 at home to Croí Ro Naofa.
