On a wet and wild Sunday afternoon in Longmeadows, The St Brendan’s football 1st XV, sponsored by Dynamic Safety Solutions continued their bid for an outside chance of gaining the 3rd promotion spot when facing St Maur’s of Rush, who are 4th in the PTSB AFL6 table, going into this morning’s Round 11 fixture.

Like two weeks ago against St Patrick's Donabate, Brian ‘Dean Harrison’ Hobbins got the Dark Forces opening score after 3 minutes with a goal, after a turnover from Scott ‘Too Darn Hot’ O’Rourke.

So that is where the similarities between this fixture and two weeks ago ends, because while that game was played in a heatwave, this game was played in the wind and rain and St Brendan’s had the wind advantage in the first half playing in The Garda Boat Club end.

After seeing a two pointer attempt hit the upright, Washington Sean Whelan made no mistake second time around with another excellent two pointer off the outside of his right boot.

It was 1-6 to 0-3 in favour of the home side, but that could have been 2-6, had Nicky ‘The Adventure Man’ McCafferty not missed a penalty, after getting distracted by an ambulance siren on the Chapelizod Road!

In the second half, St Maur’s Rush hit three consecutive single points to put three between the sides, but that would be the closest they would get to St Brendan’s where Scott ‘Too Darn Hot’ O’Rourke hit the back of the Maur’s net, following a turnover from Stephen Durkan and final pass from Liam Nagle.

There were second half singles from McCafferty, O’Rourke, The Golden Mullet Conall Morgan and Adam ‘Wishful Thinking’ Lynch. Whereas Scatman John Dorrian, Kevin ‘The Seventy Sixer’ Berry and Luke ‘The Alternative Nuke’ Reilly defended tigerishly late in the second half to ensure another clean sheet for Eoghan ‘The Bridge’ Clogher.

Despite finishing the contest with 14 men, St Brendan’s held on to a 2-12 to 0-14 victory. The result, at the time of writing, puts St Brendan’s in 4th place in the PTSB AFL6 table, with Beann Eidair, who have all but wrapped up 1st place with 10 wins out of 10, Civil Service (Next up on June 17th) in second place with 8 wins out of 10 and St Anne’s in third with a 6-1-3 record. All three teams have one game in hand.

Is promotion back on the cards?
